Part-time Youth Assistant

Carpenter-Carse Library is a small, incorporated library in Hinesburg, Vermont and the staff is strongly committed to the Library’s role as a community gathering place.  We provide a welcoming and inclusive environment, educational programs, and free access to information.

We are looking for a creative, passionate individual with a strong desire to work with youth in a public service setting. The ideal candidate will bring enthusiasm and a commitment to supporting the growth and development of youth through library programming. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the youth librarian to plan ongoing regular programming for youth as well as special events and activities for families.

  • Plan and facilitate educational and dynamic after school enrichment programs for students in grades K-8

  • Coordinate and implement the annual summer reading program, including the summer grant application. 

  • Promote library programs, recruit and register participants, and communicate with library staff, parents and caregivers.

  • Communicate with any performers/presenters including scheduling and payment agreements.

  • Obtain invoices prior to performances/events so that they can be paid in a timely manner.

  • Work with and solicit volunteers to help at library events and programs.

Other duties:

  • Provide friendly and efficient circulation desk service.

  • Provide computer, device, printer, and reference assistance to patrons.

  • Shelve and organize library materials.

  • Follow correct procedures and library policies.

Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years of library or teaching experience, or the equivalent, preferred.

  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills--works in a pleasant and effective manner with visitors and library patrons of all ages and abilities, as well as co-workers.

  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude.

  • Strong computer skills, including online catalog searching, internet navigation, word processing, etc. Experience with social media, basic graphic design skills, and an eye for creativity are a plus.

  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to pass a background check.

Hours: 

This is a part-time position which will average 12 hours a week, with opportunity for extra shifts as needed.   

Wednesday 10-5; every other Friday,  2-7; and two Saturdays per month.

Compensation:

Pay begins at $21.00 an hour.
